Unbelievable! My Personal Interview with Lance Armstrong Live for My Book!

I had a great day in the life of “Paige” just a couple days ago. I had the privilege of interviewing Lance Armstrong live in Vancouver!

You may be wondering how some “ordinary folk” like me snagged an interview with super-cool, 7-time Tour de France winner & cancer survivor, Lance Armstrong.

Well...I work for a really cool company that books big celebrities like Lance for speaking enagagements (see http://www.bigspeak.com/), so I got hooked up through my company. My company booked Lance for a three city speaking tour in Canada (each engagement was six figures for 1 hour keynote net to Lance). Jonathan (my current boss, friend and co-author) and I negotiated a live interview into the contract. TO SEE A CLIP FROM LANCE'S PRESENTATION

The speaking gig closed all the way back on August 23, 2005, but the day was finally here and I was all pins and needles. I felt super lucky and in awe that this was happening to “little ol’ me”!

Now it was the day of the event and we got word that Lance was flying in on his private jet at 4:30p.m. only a ½ hour before he would be speaking on stage.

Jonathan and I shuffled backstage at 4:30 and saw Lance. He was surrounded by people and we began to set up our audio and visual equipment in a little tent behind the stage. He and Bill Clinton spent some time together because they are very good friends.

Now it was time. Lance casually entered our tent with a comfortable smile on his face. His demeanor was so casual and easy that he made us feel instantly at ease. He sat down in an over sized leather chair. There was only one chair in the tent and he became concerned as to where Jonathan and I would sit if he took the chair, which I found very endearing.

Of course we insisted that he sit in the chair and we began the interview. We asked him several questions about how someone serious about success could emulate his the type of success he has had in his life. We then took photos and had him sign two books and a baseball. The baseball was for Kyle, my co-worker’s son who has recently championed cancer.

My time with Lance was short, but profoundly sweet. He is such a warm, personable man. (Funny side note: he said his son was the very last one in his class to take the training wheels of his bike!)

And for those who are wondering…no, there is no chance he is going to be going for an 8th win with the Tour. He talked a lot about how in this next stage of his life and how he is dedicating himself to eliminating cancer. Yes, he did talked about Sheryl Crow (for those out of the celebrity gossip, they have called off the engagement and Sheryl just got diagnosed with cancer) and mentioned that her getting cancer was just another sign to him that he is supposed to dedicate himself in this next chapter of his life to fighting cancer. It was very magical and he is a really cool guy.

In my next post, I will have clips from the actual interview available for you to hear. Check back soon!

Paige - That is awesome! My roommate is such a big fan of Lance... he'd be so jealous of you. Can't wait to read about it in your book.
